We are raising Erika bilingually. Yoshie speaks in Japanese to her, while I speak in English. We also try to expose her to both languages in her activities. For example, her preschool is English, but she has a music class and a play class once a week which are in Japanese.
Anyway, she is pretty good at picking the right language to use depending on who she's talking to. English to daddy, Japanese to mommy, and so on. She has a stuffed Shimajiro toy from Japan, which naturally she sometimes talks to. The interesting thing is that when mommy is around she talks to Shimajiro in Japanese, but when daddy is around, she talks to him in English. One presumes that Mickey Mouse or Dora, despite being English speaking characters get Japanese when mom is around too.
